Rise And Shine

Not to spook some people who use the idiom regularly, it of biblical origin. This may surprise some sensitive Muslim friends who use it innocently and regularly. “Rise” means to get up and “shine” in its normal context meaning to “wake up. act lively and do well” at least, without digging deeper. I used to think it is a soldier’s command. Rise and shine your boots. The internet kills the romantic notions.

The earliest use of ‘rise and shine’ in print allude to a biblical reference, in Isaiah 60:1. King James Version, 1611, gives that as: Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

Just Another Causeway Sunrise.

Too lazy to drive out to Desaru coast for the sunrise view in the morning. Even in JB city, I had to leave my hotel at 5:30 am to scout for an ideal location east of the causeway.

By line of sight, here’s looking across the Johor Straits through to Admiralty Road on Singapore island, to Sebana Cove on the eastern gulf and onwards to the South China Sea.

A Park With Good Customer Service Is Important

One more from Selar. See previous post on Endau Rompin National Park. Sunrise at Endau Rompin. The Johor Parks management is doing all the right things such as operating an office at Bekok town to provide assistance to visitors. I wrote at the time.

It is opened seven days a week and a very helpful Ms Nurul there provided me with important support by furnishing updated info, maps, GPS coordinates and radio communications frequencies. Tell me. How many government servants would volunteer their personal mobile phone number so as to be reachable in case of an emergency, after office hours?

Memories Of Labour

Memories Of Labour. I wrote recently about Kota Kinabalu being the sunset capital of the world, particularly from the beaches of Tanjung Aru. On peninsular Malaysia, we have what may be the Sunrise Capital. The sunrise are consistently glorious.

I am talking about the beaches of Cheating near Kuantan city. It faces the east and the South China Sea. I used to stay at the Hyatt Regency Kuantan which was on the Teluk Cempedak beach. Loved the sea facing dining terrace at the Hyatt Kuantan, The sunrise view from there was great too. Many Malaysians know Cherating from Club Med located there.

One day on this same day, around 13 years ago, and it was also Workers Day or Labour Day, also a public holiday then, I took an impulse drive to Kuantan. Every hotel from luxury beach resorts to budget hotels were fully booked. Was grateful for the thoughtful hotels that placed a sign showing “full house” visible from the car. Grateful also for budget hotels that have their phone numbers on their lighted signboards. You will appreciative that too when you parked and ran in/out of lobbies like a million times.

See over 92 hotels and homestays in Kuantan, Cherating and Beserah area.

Many hotel less people ended up sleeping in the car which presented two challenges. Option 1: Die of carbon monoxide poisoning if the car engine and air conditioning were kept running, Lower the windows and the car will host a buzzing mosquito party. Option 2: You will die of Dengue and other mozzie carried diseases. Moral of the story: Book your hotel in advance as everyone has the same idea to visit a popular tourist destination on a public holiday.

Google was so primitive then and it even suggested Genting Highlands Resort as an alternative nearby hotel. I called up and expectedly they were full house too. Is like that all over the world. I recently wrote about the overcrowding at Yellowstone National Park in the US.

With the full occupancy, the open air park was full too. Was lucky to get a space. Luckily my then travel partner and camera assistant Pooi-San PS was quite a tough and hardy girl.

I walked groggily to the beach at around 6 am and soon saw the most beautiful sunrise. A just reward for all the hardship.

Lee Jetty Sunrise

She saw the sunrise rising in Penang and chased after it, ending up at Lee Jetty at around 7:15 am. The takeaway is scenic or beautiful scenes can be found at your own backyard, if you care to see it. You don’t need to go to Mauritius 🙂

Important to note that she kept the horizon or sea level. A slanting sea from careless framing can ruin a nice seaside shot.

I used the free Nik Collection suite that included HDR Efex Pro2. I think Nik’s mobile Snapseed will be able to accomplish the same with its Drama filter. Making the rain clouds visible added drama to the sunrise. The blue and red hues can be adjusted to taste. Additional lens flare was rendered by Photoshop CC.
