Introducing Busan

With over 3.6 million people, Busan is South Korea’s second largest city and largest seaport. Busan is known for its beaches, hot springs, nature reserves and events such as the city’s renowned international film festival held each fall.

Busan is a good destination for those seeking a more laid back atmosphere than Seoul. The city is located at the southern tip of the Korean peninsula ~ wikitravel.org/en/Busan

Busan became a well known to Malaysians as a location for tourists after the 2016 South Korean zombie apocalypse action thriller “Train to Busan”.

For a different intro to this city, I am using a drawing of the film’s megastar Gong Yoo (stage name) drawn by my friend freelance artist and lawyer by day, Lim Chin Han on Fb and @chinhan10.art.poetry on IG. See her gallery for many more amazing lifelike drawings.

This pic was drawn based on a picture from tv’s “Goblin” – Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.

The intrepid artist is also a fan and walking expert on her idol. She told me Gong Yoo is in fact is from and born in Busan.

The Clock Tower of Fraser’s Hill

I was looking for a decent pic of the roundabout clock tower in Fraser’s Hill and, at last, I found one in Wikimedia.

The stone structure with creeper vines and flower beds was an iconic landmark in front of the golf course, post office, police station and the the former Merlin Hotel. It is the town centre. A favourite selfie background for visitors and something that greets the visitor on arrival.

Magnificent View Of The Main Range

This was the pic I used for Fraser’s Hill contributed by Sharon Teo. (https://www.facebook.com/seaDevilyn)

It is too beautiful to be buried and deserves to be a standalone post. One thing I used to like about Frasers were the many ferns growing wild there.

There was also a mini zoo there and I used to cry for the lonely baby elephant kept in it. Malaysia should ban all private and mini zoos as the animals almost always end up neglected and ill treated. Without the internet at that time, there was no one to complain to or nowhere to highlight her plight except the Malay Mail Hotline. Speak up and say you don’t want to see caged or chained animals.

Great job, Sharon and thank you for sharing the pic used here:

Fraser’s Hill

I recently featured the highlands hill resort of Cameron Highlands as a destination for your family and kids for the upcoming school holidays. An alternative highlands vacation spot is the nearer Fraser’s Hill.

I have been getting conflicting information about the one way traffic system going uphill or down hill based on alternate hours. It was implemented during the colonial days because the road was too narrow and winding. Recently, an old road going down hill was opened up again, making it two way using two separate roads. This was confirmed by Donald GH Tan, a friend, regular bird watcher and nature lover who used to go uphill.

I was kind of sad to hear about the changes as the one way road and waiting system brought back cherished memories as a child. Arriving at the foothill with the wrong timing meant waiting at The Gap and listening to the exciting and lush jungle sounds. It was something special.

The Gap Rest House is now abandoned and derelict according to Donald. There are still many bungalows and chalets on the hill, many with Tudor style design and charming colonial era designs. Some are abandoned as the Hainanese caretakers grew old and retired. Take your family there before more changes affect the forgotten hill resort.

Surprised that two of the resorts, I stayed as a kid, are still there: Puncak Inn and Merlin (now Shahzan Inn Fraser’s Hill).

Regent Street, London

Situated in the heart of London’s West End, Regent Street is one of the capital’s most famous thoroughfares. Home to more than 75 international flagship stores; Regent Street was described by Visit London dot com as London’s ultimate shopping and lifestyle destination.

This was another pic shared by Malaysian friend 陈雪玲 Shirlyn Tan who lives and works in London. Photographed by her when the street was dressed up for Christmas. I remember walking from here to Piccadilly Circus and loving the longish old curved buildings.
