Mickey Mouse Shadows

Shooting the annual lion dance and fireworks at Thean Hou temple last year took time. Much time. Although the two events I wanted to photograph was scheduled at 10 pm, I had to go there before 5 pm.

Otherwise; the road up the hill will be congested with cars and chartered buses. Many drivers who came later, gave up and their cars can be seen parked on the highway as I was driving back. A few, overheated and stalled going up the hill.

Time after time, a Malaysian event will never start on time or takes place as scheduled. The fireworks didn’t start until way past 11 in the night when it was published as 10 pm.

Anyway, plenty of time to while away and to look at or photograph things not done normally. The temple courtyard had interesting shadows I never noticed on previous trips. Mickey Mouse shadows.

Content Farm

A day trip destination like the fishing village of Tanjung Sepat benefited from the then Facebook boom, I hypothesised.

Many Facebook users do not or can’t write or produce original content. Which was why sharing became popular. It may be second nature for us old bloggers and we forget not everyone are as prolific.

So a picturesque venue like Tanjung Sepat provided the backgrounds for selfies. Selfies are quick, easy and valuable content that let people post on competitive social media. Malacca, Sekinchan, Kuala Selangor and KKB are some of the towns that benefited as day trip destinations too. Domestic tourism wins with selfie tourism.

This was photographed at the jetty next to the Gano mushroom farm. On my trip there yesterday, I noticed the wooden seaside pier is now gone.

Unfortunately, town planners possibly do not appreciate or recognise rustic things. The charming wooden quay is now being demolished and replaced by a long modern concrete jetty.

The town did boom over the years with a proliferation of seafood restaurants. Visitors like to see fishing boats and nets, not just eateries.

The Beach Boys Of Morib

Morib beach is so idyllic, secluded and near yet nobody comes here on a weekday. Except for the beach boys, a group of monkeys having the esplanade to themselves. Glad to see wildlife co existing.

Delightful to see them swinging on Casuarina trees. Morib is the nearest real beach for us landlocked KLites. You will cry if you come here on a weekend as I previously did. The amount of litter and garbage strewn about and left behind by visitors was shocking.

La La Land Again

He correctly noted that the original image of Lala or clams fried with bee hoon or vermicelli from the Asus phone (on Facebook) could do with more DOF or depth of field. It was his polite and tactful way of saying it was not perfectly focused. Nice guy. 🙂

I looked at the image back home on a big screen and try to figure out what went wrong. We sat at a table at edge of the restaurant, where there was too much sun spilling in. While the free lighting was appreciated, it also meant one thing.

The Lala Fried Vermicelli’s image on the phone was glared out on the screen. It was near impossible to judge focus. Good thing, I took a shot with the GM-1. This GM-1 image had better depth as it was running with a smaller (deeper) aperture, plus the camera has an array of audio and visual focus confirmation.

It was still not ideal as the GM-1 has no viewfinder either, only LCD. I was using the 12 to 50 mm OM-D 5 kit lens and the lens is still crazy sharp considering the abuse it received. In comparison, the phone was running at f2 and was too shallow for its purpose.
