Don’t Be A Chicken On Social Media

I mentioned a pet peeve of mine on social media earlier. It is perplexing to see people posting landscape and travel pics without a description of its location or nary a caption. Not only is it a result of “kiasuism” or afraid to lose attitude but they could be agents of telcos out to increase bandwidth consumption.

The culprits seem to want increased comment count because they know their followers will ask “where lah?” repeatedly, Though, I think the best comment ought to be Flower Bridge in Cantonese (Far Kiu).

Look: no matter how beautiful was your sunset beach pic, somebody will do better. Maybe some people are secretive because they went somewhere without their spouse or partner’s knowledge. or there could be another reason. Tell me, habitual kiasuians: How hard is it to type Morib or Malibu Beach? I’ll understand if it is to protect an unspoilt. remote and pristine nature attraction. I also understand your haste to post.

Even more frustrating are people who post food pics and provide no info as to the dish or the name of a restaurant or eatery. I asked a girl once why she concealed the name of a restaurant. She gave me the most absurd but honest reply.

She said she doesn’t want to make the restaurant more popular or it won’t be her own little secret and by popularising it. it may make the place non exclusive to her anymore. What a selfish reason as many small traders don’t have a budget to advertise and depend on word of mouth.

Be sociable on social media or get off it. Share if you agree.

Tehran, Iran

When you see a bunch of Muslim tourists exploring every nook and cranny in the massive Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, they are probably Iranians. This family are. I asked.

They are liberal and curious about another culture. After that, I met a family of Iranians inside a lift in Sungai Wang mall. In a small talk, the head of the family kept asking me if I know the difference between Iran and Iraq. He was surprised when I told him I know Iran is Persian while Iraq is Arab. They all speak good English. I am surprised and happy I can find the original camera file/ image of Thean Hou from 2010.

In the early 1980s, I was about to enter Iran and the Iranian Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini and the toppling of the Pahlavi dynasty under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was fresh news. There after came the Iran hostage crisis which lasted 444 days. The diplomatic standoff between Iran and the United States resulted in a very complicated relationship between the two countries lasting till today. Friends told me then. getting an Iranian stamp on my passport will jeopardize future US visa applications.

The playboy Shah was supported by the United States. The last monarch and emperor of Iran spent his final days in exile in the United States. He died in Egypt in 1980.

Fast forward to today and a friend and hotel booking client asked if I know of any hotel in Tehran. I checked and found many roadblocks. I suspect it is because of economic sanctions by US and UN. The booking middle men companies and credit card companies are American. I persevered and found the hotels, After all, people of other nationality do travel to Iran because of legit involvement in the oil and gas industry. You can try here.

Feelings: Boy Buys Mee.

I have a peeve about landscape or street photography on social media. People tend to garnish a mediocre pic with a quote, without attribution. Happens a lot in the Malay world of Instagram. They take a pic of the sky or a goat and superimposed it with a quote. The end result looks like a constructed meme.

“It was very much like Norman Rockwell: small town America. We walked to school or rode our bikes, stopped at the penny candy store on the way home from school, skated on the pond.” ~ Dorothy Hamill, American Olympic skater.

Insert or add some nonsensical babble or philosophical thought or hipster rant about life.

Taking a pic and not wanting to waste it, you go back to write something to make up at story retrospectively, that wasn’t there. Worst are those who insert thoughts into a stranger’s mind. How do you know what the stranger on the street was thinking without making contact?

The boy is thinking: “I am hoping the colours of my bike add some excitement to this drab town. The umbrella is giving this town the competition it needs. Nothing happens around here since the war, my grandpa used to say.”

End of fiction. I was in tiny town Rasa. It may be good for those who likes writing but there is a danger. Let your picture tell your story, The danger is it may affect your story telling ability with a camera and your audience becomes lazy too. And not everyone can write compelling captions that the reader can rasa or feel.

The opposite is my pet peeve. Those who are extremely frugal with captions. For some reasons, they don’t even want to reveal the subject matter or its location, making it as annoying as a cryptic post.

Nearest decent hotel to Rasa is The Leverage Business Hotel in Rawang

Le Apple Boutique Hotel KLCC

Monalisa Ding (@monalisading on IG) from Sarawak is a smart shopper. The last time, I featured her, was about her stay in a strategically located hotel in Penang, booked through MyCen Hotels. This time she found another ‘value for money’ deal in another big city, Kuala Lumpur. She booked via my website again and I am grateful for her consistent support.

She sent me a pic of her room. Beyond the boutique hotel moniker and stylish exterior, the room looked basic but functional. The real attraction may be its location at the heart of Kua;a Lumpur, Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC are a short walk from the hotel. So is the Ampang Park LRT station, The chain has another hotel of the same name in Bukit Bintang.
