I like the Kampung Hakka exploration in that it is a journey of surprises and discoveries. No guides, no preconceived notions. Stumbled upon this Chinese chess board engraved on a stone table. The players kept all the chess pieces but left two cigarette packs behind. These are signs of life but they are always indirect. mysterious or baffling.

But apparently not. Almost every house has a Taoist symbol at the door or front entrance that repudiates the theory.

A small altar dedicated to the Chinese Ti Kong or the Jade Emperor God can be seen everywhere. It is seen here as a metal fixture on the wall to the extreme right of the pic. The bright red altars have all faded like the memories of the generations who lived here.

Kampung Hakka Mantin – Part 7

I know the intro took a while but we are now finally into the village proper. The abandoned and dilapidated homes inside are mysterious, intriguing and silently creepy. Some are seemingly deserted but yet there is fresh laundry hanging outside. I wasn’t able to knock on doors and to inquire. Neither did I see people. I’ll come back when my walking gets better.
