Rain Over A Fishing Village

While traveling from Taiping to Kuala Sepetang, I saw a standalone purple hotel on the way. Thinking it might be the Yam Hotel, its name was even more intriguing as we drove closer. It was named after another tuber and it was The Potato Hotel!

Kuala Sepetang, formerly Port Weld, is such a charming town. It is a fishing village and there are mangrove river tours to watch fireflies and eagles, There is also great seafood and there are a number of charcoal kilns good for educational visits.

Remnants of the original first railway line of Malaya 1885 is till there with the ticketing counter (now a kopitiam), the original station sign and bits of the old tracks still around,

The town is both a historical and eco tourism gem that is under promoted and unknown to many Malaysians. The town’s name change didn’t do it any favours, I suppose.

It is so near to Taiping, another sleepy and picturesque colonial town, well known for its Lake Gardens. I saw the Potato Hotel again when compiling a list of hotels for the Taiping area. Am pleasantly surprised to see so many new accommodation options for Taiping.

No disrespect to past and present detainees of the notorious Kamunting detention camp but you dont need to be detained under the ISA to stay in Kamunting town nearby.

Kamunting has many budget hotels. Or one can also stay in Bukit Merah Laketown where there are chalets on water. See the Potato hotel or pick another hotel here and visit the triangle of attractions:

Cloverfield

Cloverfield.

I like this road in an old part of the city. It is chaotic, cars go against traffic in the one-way street, and the twisty buildings are dizzying. It has character.

No Hard Evidence

I remember when menthol cigarettes were introduced in Malaysia, a curious urban legend soon emerged claiming menthol ciggies will cause softening of erections or a flaccid cock. There was no empirical evidence or scientific evidence but every local guy believed in it.

The evidence were anecdotal at best and were probably from guys who drank too much at clubs. Excessive alcohol can cause ED too.

What was criminal was that the menthol cigarettes and long slim versions were targeted at women to recruit more female smokers by projecting a cool image or trendy perception. Strangely, there were no talk about it affecting a woman’s libido.

Whoever or whatever was the source of the fake news, it was a very effective deterrent for guys. No guy wanted to be seen with a green pack. Haha.

Losing a lung via cancer was less worrisome than losing a hard on.

Although many anti-smoking campaigns suggest smoking can lead to impotency, the point was never driven home. Maybe the medical evidence were not promoted hard enough.

A graphic picture of a limp or soft cock on cigarette packs would have worked better than a black diseased lung I think.

Opium For Nga Nga

Elizabeth Chong being the nice person and cat (and dog) lover she is, brought a calling gift to my house. She told my mom it is Meow’s Ah Phian in Hokkien; meaning cat’s opium. Haha.

In Chinese it is known as cat mint or catnip in English. It is really addictive like a drug to cats, it seems. When I was out, my cat Nga Nga raided the pouch, tore it and ate half of it. But then, he is a compulsive glue sniffer all along and has always been attracted to any glue smells such as adhesives on envelope flaps and stamps. He even licked a jar of Tiger Balm once.

Catnip is a plant, organic and herbal. I read that it can trigger hallucinations and cause cats to be high. Let’s see if Nga Nga makes drunk calls (drunk dialing) to his ex girlfriends at 3 am tonight as many of us intoxicated guys have done, at one time or another. 🙂

Seaside Cats

Morib Beach is sort of bizarre. I saw wild monkeys and stray cats on the same day. The sunset was dull and cool at the esplanade on that day but I saw something heart warming. Hard to see in this pic but some of the of the human visitors were sharing their snacks with a couple of appreciative homeless cats.

The A7R camera’s resolution is so massive I can crop in (on another shot), recover from the shadows and show the close up as an inset.

Sometimes, seeing a sunset can cheer you up, sometimes seeing a simple act of kindness can too.
