Kampung Hakka Mantin And Santa Factory Series – Self-Contemplation

We just came to the 10th picture in the Kampung Hakka series and it is time for some honest self-contemplation. While I am happy with the manual controls, quality and resolution of the Asus camera, will I attempt another extensive photo essay again with the phone camera alone?

The emphatic answer is No! It is more a workflow issue. To select the pics, I have to look at the thumbs in the gallery, I then expand the chosen pic to confirm clarity and sharpness. The shortlisted pic is sent by gmail to myself and retrieved on my PC. The process is too tedious, time consuming and tiresome. I know there are other methods. Don’t forget I also need to write the captions or story.

I’ll go with a real camera with a removable SD card such as my compact GM1 the next time. I can just pull out the card and slot it into a card reader. Now I have 600 pics in the phone I must look through again and delete later.

Kampung Hakka Mantin – Part 2

Unexpected difficulty was trimming the exposure to control the highlights and judging via the phone screen under bright sun.

Nine Emperor Gods Festival Procession In Jinjang – Part 4

It is currently almost unknown and under-promoted. I asked the cycling man about the significance of pedaling the tricycle. He told me has no idea. Lol.

Besides talking to strangers, I spent most of my time adjusting the flash strength as the white attire worn by devotees can over-expose or burn out easily.

One thing I learned is that the standard zoom (24 to 70mm) lens and tiny HVL-F20M flash were sufficient for the parade. Felt like jettisoning the redundant heavy prime lenses and powerful HVL-F60M flash I brought along but my car was too far away.

Conjunction of Jupiter And Venus 2015 – Part 1

Conjunction of Jupiter And Venus 2015 – Part 1

The two brightest planets, Venus and Jupiter, are appearing close together for a rare and dramatic event known as a conjunction. OK. For those in countries where it is now already or past twilight, go to your window or balcony to look. Come back to read Part 2 about photographing the mating planets.

If you are an Android user, install Google Sky Map. It is one of the best reasons to own an Android phone or tablet. Turn on your GPS and search for Venus or Jupiter in the app. Point your phone according to the guide arrows and you will find the two planets in just a few seconds.

Depending on your location, time and phone’s GPS accuracy, the two planets may not be as close or in the exact position shown on screen. The orientation and perceived separation may also vary from that of pictures you have seen. This is because the pictures are most likely photographed from a different location and time.

Nevertheless, the handy app gives you an idea as to where to look. In this picture, the two planets are hidden behind clouds. I know where they are and what they are going to do this summer.

Next: Photographing the conjunction or planetary copulation.
