Lembah Beringin – Part 4

Lembah Beringin – Part 4

Welcome To Lembah Beringin.

Neatly cut and coiffured grass is flanked by tall unruly lalang weed. The abandoned security guard post is falling apart but is surrounded by tidy, well swept roads.

The sparkling sign must have been recently cleaned and washed too. Right behind are the dilapidated and empty homes. I like the deceiving sunny disposition captured. Tina Turner’s Nutbush City Limits kept playing in my mind.

Thirst Quencher At Yik Mun

Asam Boi is a local drink with preserved plums (shin mui) floating in it. The dried plums from China are salted, sugar coated and sourish although the drink may also have tamarind and/or limau kasturi (calamansi) added for stronger colour and flavour. It is a refreshing, tangy, cold drink on a hot afternoon.

Besides Hainan White Coffee, Yik Mun also serves Limau Asam Boi at RM 4.50. Quite expensive, I know.

Lembah Beringin – Part 2

Make Yourself At Home.

I’ll say Lembah Beringin as there were many little silent side roads that were like traps. It lead to nowhere and you need to reverse walk or drive to get out.

Sometimes the lonely road leads to something bizarre. Like as if dilapidated and empty houses weren’t enough, there is a set of discarded sofa and mattresses waiting for guests here.

Yik Mun’s Hainanese Chicken Chop

It is halal too. The jar is mashed potato and the bun is a man tou. Pic captured with Asus ZenFone 3.

Kow Po Revisited

Kow Po is that famous family-owned ice-cream parlour in Bentong. I tried their cendol (icy dessert of green jelly in coconut milk, sweetened with palm sugar) this time and was delighted to find a scoop of pandan (screwpine) flavoured ice-cream on it.

While home-made ice cream is their signature product, part of the appeal of the place is the old-school containers and high-back diner-style chairs of the 60’s. The place is also quite dark, perhaps harking back to the dimly-lit coffee-houses that served as courting venues during yesteryears.

There is also a Malay lady selling some killer nasi lemak and rojak for which I didn’t try. On weekends, there are literally busloads of people lining up to get in.
