IOI City Mall, Putrajaya – Part 9

I like the visual contrasts created by the group of women in black burqa and the shiny reflective floor. I am guessing they are group tourists from the Middle East as only guided tourists shop in groups. No?

When I saw the scene from outside, I was thinking “The world is a stage”. The shop front is like a Chinese opera stage. The challenge was keeping perspective distortion under control. I used Photoshop ‘select by colour range’ to isolate the reds.

So, what is a Yubi So?

IOI City Mall, Putrajaya – Part 2

A large glass facade on the cineplex floor provides an interesting photography subject in a play of light, shadows and silhouettes.

Lee Jetty Sunrise

She saw the sunrise rising in Penang and chased after it, ending up at Lee Jetty at around 7:15 am. The takeaway is scenic or beautiful scenes can be found at your own backyard, if you care to see it. You don’t need to go to Mauritius 🙂

Important to note that she kept the horizon or sea level. A slanting sea from careless framing can ruin a nice seaside shot.

I used the free Nik Collection suite that included HDR Efex Pro2. I think Nik’s mobile Snapseed will be able to accomplish the same with its Drama filter. Making the rain clouds visible added drama to the sunrise. The blue and red hues can be adjusted to taste. Additional lens flare was rendered by Photoshop CC.

Kampung Hakka Mantin – Part 4

The Hakkas are a dialect of people from South China. Many migrants work at the tin mines in the area. It is alleged that the British colonialists called the town “Mine Tin”. Locals soon corrupt the name into Mantin, as it is known today.

The village under siege is well covered by my long time friend, the artist and activist Victor Chin. A Hakka himself, Victor has covered much ground in bringing awareness to the plight of the 120 year old village in his campaigns.

It is a story of a village caught by development and greedy, grasping developers. Underneath, is a forgotten story about history, heritage and court battles to stop bulldozers. Since Victor has covered much ground, I will not repeat his good work. Do a search and the stories are on the web.

I am attracted to the urbex and derelict aspect from a photography viewpoint. Many of the residents in houses already sold or surrendered, have moved out and the wooden properties are left in ruins pending final demolition. It was almost surreal and heartbreaking to see skeletal remains of houses seemingly abandoned in a hurry. Yet one can sense that some clinging humans still lurk inside. Tragic but glad I stumbled upon it before all is lost.

A Simple Plan

The monkeys, they have a plan. When they see a sack of bananas, they don’t snatch it directly. They launch a coordinated sneak attack. One guy lifts her skirt while another grabs her from the back, hoping she’ll drop the stash. This candid moment came about when Carmen was sitting on the ledge as I fine-tuned the camera’s fill-flash settings.

Behind and below is a beautiful view of mangrove swamps and the Straits of Malacca. On a very clear day, one should be able to see Sumatra from up here.

The ‘Near Threatened’ silvered-leaf monkeys on Malawati Hill are in an uneasy but symbiotic relationship with humans. Their antics draw tourists to the hill, benefiting businesses in Kuala Selangor town. In return, they get food and tolerance from the authorities.
