Renggam: The Time Travel Town

I like exploring small towns. From Simpang Renggam town where I was staying, I drove to Renggam town which was even smaller. It is located between Kluang and Layang Layang on the secondary inner back roads of Southern Johor.

Many parts of the tiny town are preserved in its original form, untouched by development. The facade of the Hainanese Association is pristine and beautiful. It was like stepping into a time travel machine.

Simpang Renggam was on the busy trunk road to Singapore but it was eventually bypassed by the North South Highway. Renggam is still a railway town. See my earlier post on SR Inn as a decent accommodation option.

Around Kuala Selangor

Kuala Selangor is a fantastic nearby getaway. There are those monkeys at Malawati Hill, the lighthouse and nature park, the seafood and fishing village of Pasir Penambang and if that is not enough, there is also Auntie’s Kopitiam, Cendol Bakar and more.

It may be a good idea to stay at the De Palma Inn , Sun Inns VI Boutique Hotel (and Sky Mirror) which are near to these places. Don’t forget the Fireflies Park and the beautiful Sri Shakti Temple. Links to most of these places are given and as with all my pages, alternative, related and other nearby accommodation options are also provided: See also Hotels In Sekinchan.

Generic Main Street, Fishing Village

We drove into this street in Tanjung Sepat by accident. It was very long and is flanked by wooden shops on both sides. My first reaction was “I have only seen such long streets in Cambodia” Alex who recently returned from Cambodia. nodded his head in agreement.

I think it was the seemingly endless Charles de Gaulle Boulevard in Phnom Penh Cty that I rode a motorbike on. Could be another, It was confusing. No romantic colonial name here though. Just plain vanilla Jalan Besar – a common or generic Main Street name in many small towns in his country.

It was the main street of the village, I suppose. Now the village has grown into a town via other parts. Tip: I could still retrospectively find the street name as I captured a shop’s signboard with a name alone. Googling the grocery shop led to an address.

Fascinating that you can buy just about anything under the sun at one of the shops here. There were also temples and churches. Unlike Cambodia, bikers without helmets zoomed about here like many villages in Malaysia.

Photography Tip: Shooting through a car’s front windscreen can destroy the camera’s white balance. The colour balance will be altered by subtle factory glass tinting not visible or apparent to our eyes as we get used to it after a while. A little post processing can fix it usually.

Content Farm

A day trip destination like the fishing village of Tanjung Sepat benefited from the then Facebook boom, I hypothesised.

Many Facebook users do not or can’t write or produce original content. Which was why sharing became popular. It may be second nature for us old bloggers and we forget not everyone are as prolific.

So a picturesque venue like Tanjung Sepat provided the backgrounds for selfies. Selfies are quick, easy and valuable content that let people post on competitive social media. Malacca, Sekinchan, Kuala Selangor and KKB are some of the towns that benefited as day trip destinations too. Domestic tourism wins with selfie tourism.

This was photographed at the jetty next to the Gano mushroom farm. On my trip there yesterday, I noticed the wooden seaside pier is now gone.

Unfortunately, town planners possibly do not appreciate or recognise rustic things. The charming wooden quay is now being demolished and replaced by a long modern concrete jetty.

The town did boom over the years with a proliferation of seafood restaurants. Visitors like to see fishing boats and nets, not just eateries.
