Kelondong And Wontons

We stumbled upon the best wantan (mee) soup this side of town by chance. The wontons include a big sui kow dumpling and the regular wontons had bite size prawns in it. Wonderful stuff. The noodles and char siew were buried underneath when I scooped the wontons and vegetables onto the ‘kon lo’ noodles plate.

Only thing I didn’t like was the drink recommended by the Indonesian waitress. Sar Lay Shin Mui or Kelondong fruit with sour plum drink. The fruit is known as Spondias dulcis or ambarella or jew plum. I think they blended it with all the skin intact. The drink tasted too raw and greenish. Anna liked it though.

Retaurant 168 is at 1 Jalan Brunei Utara, Pudu, 55100 Kuala Lumpur and is non-halal.

Gum Chewing Woman Of 168

How about the non-smiling curry laksa chef who’s chewing gum non stop? As I was to find out later, Restaurant 168 is also famous for its curry laksa and curry noodles in addition to its prawn wonton noodles (wantan mee).

Restaurant 168

My long time friend Anna Har took me out for lunch and to do some street photography today. It is a meaningful and deeply appreciated gesture. Anna didn’t want credit, at first.

I told her it may inspire other friends to volunteer. As I told Anna, it not only provided the needed physical exercise but the outing is also mentally therapeutic to be able to talk to a friend.

For lunch, I told her ‘let’s find a place with real character and attitude’. Not some hipster joints. We chanced upon this famous restaurant named 168 at the back of the former Majestic Cinema in Pudu. It has plenty of character plus the food is good.

Looks like a shop in old Hong Kong. The Jalan Brunei area is a vintage and forgotten area of Kuala Lumpur.

Two Cops And A Baby

I posted a series of pics on my Facebook to celebrate Thaipusam yesterday, Some went back to as far as 10 years ago. Come see them at
https://www.facebook.com/mytvsmith

One the most popular was this image in terms of likes and shares, I think I’ll share it here too.

Thaipusam 11.

If you are stitching together a photo essay always reinforce it with human interest stories. There are many side stories that many photographers fail to record. Keep an eye out for non-mainstream activities that will warm the cockles of one’s heart. This shy boy asked to sit and pose with cops in one isolated corner.

Whoa – Souped Up Cars On Thaipusam Chariot Night

I really don’t know how to write the captions for this pic. You know the cars that we see parked under the bridges in Putrajaya? Their intent are to show off their car’s sound system or I.C.E. (in-car entertainment system), I think.

I always expect to see some owners waving jumper cables because battery drain will be no small issue. Haha.

You know how some Yindians like to decorate or accessories their cars in the most gaudy fashion? What happens when they combine the two loves?

Last night, we saw a car decorated like a chariot and it was blasting very loud Indian music. Lo and behold! There wasn’t just one Knight Rider or KITT wannabe.

The whole street had similar cars parked together like an exhibition or competition, all with funky lights and music thumping hard in anticipation of the chariot.

Imagine the noise and blinding lights from the mobile Light Sensation show. Am happy to be able to record this new phenomenon on a Thaipusam procession night.

What are such car competitions normally called, anyway?
