How The Cub Became A Monster

Just pay a RM 18 deposit to get one on the road, it seemed. Named after the original Honda Cub model, it was essentially a made-for-city moped. The engines are now mostly noisy and smoky 2 stroke lawn mover sounding engines. To compound the problem, the kapchais are usually modified by owners to have mufflers removed and engine tuned to street race.

Relied upon by the poor and an entire industry of delivery services, it has become a cheap and indispensable mode of transport to circumvent traffic congestion, poor public transportation options and rising costs of owning a car. City Hall is now mulling the possibility of banning the humble kapchai to reduce carbon emissions. Quite unreasonable to me, as the cited problems are the accumulated results of years of tolerant or half-hearted enforcement.

The kapchais were allowed to run red lights, ride on kerbs and go against the flow of traffic with impunity or nary a warning. Now authorities are citing snatch thefts as a concern for allowing the kapchai. By closing one eye, we made conditions fertile for two wheeled thieves to get away.

Who would blink an eye if a kapchai rode on the kerb next to a pedestrian or rode against traffic flow, made illegal u-turns or crashed through red lights? Years of lawlessness turned the docile cub into a dangerous monster.

IOI City Mall, Putrajaya – Part 15

As a kid, I have only tried the rinks in Sungai Wang Plaza and at Asiajaya mall. Many younger people only know of the one in Sunway Pyramid nowadays.

The Sungai Wang and Asiajaya rinks were like cold meat storage rooms. Completely sealed from outside, they were cold as winter inside. That attracted people, I suppose. The massive refrigeration costs may have made them broke though. I wonder if Asiajaya mall still exists.

Lembah Beringin – Part 2

Make Yourself At Home.

I’ll say Lembah Beringin as there were many little silent side roads that were like traps. It lead to nowhere and you need to reverse walk or drive to get out.

Sometimes the lonely road leads to something bizarre. Like as if dilapidated and empty houses weren’t enough, there is a set of discarded sofa and mattresses waiting for guests here.

Lembah Beringin – Part 1

Shattered Dreams.

I can still remember my friend Leonard Tan singing the television and radio jingle ‘What A Wonderful World’ in a faux gravelly Louis Armstrong voice. That was in the 90s when the township was heavily promoted. Today the township is filled with moldy, empty houses under skies of blue and clouds of white.

Many parts are like a ghost town and some people even called it a Chernobyl. It is a disaster for the buyers stuck with homes that are now not only in limbo but in ruins.

I will try to discuss its failure as I explore and examine the township deeper for this new photo essay series. Only problem was; there were so few people living there who I can talk to. For many of the early, hopeful buyers and investors, it turned out to be shattered dreams as they are now saddled with properties they find difficult to sell or rent out.

The only positive for me, if compared to Bukit Beruntung, was there were NO heartbreaking sightings of abandoned dogs and puppies living alone here.

Shattered glass window as seen from the inside of the abandoned guard post leading to the golf club. Coincidentally, Shattered Dreams was a hit for Johnny Hates Jazz in the 90s.

Watching Wet Soda Dry

An Indian grocery shop man drying goods that are salvageable. Most of the other goods inside the shop are permanently damaged.

Gotta love Temerloh people. Everywhere I go, from flooded villages to the suburbs to town, I am greeted with a warm smile. Not to make less of their sufferings but I think they are such resilient people. Exuding sunshine under the dark clouds.
