Waiter, There’s A Beauty Queen Mussel In My Pineapple

Waiter, There’s A Beauty Queen Mussel In My Pineapple.

Was quite pleased with my own order of Pineapple Fried Rice. The dish is normally fried rice served in a hollowed out pineapple half. This is the Piña Colada of the local food world. Normally some pineapple pieces are fried together for aroma and authenticity.

Didn’t expect it to be Seafood Pineapple Fried Rice that included a mussel perched on a pedestal, like some freshly crowned and seated beauty pageant winner, some prawns and slices of white fish. I scrapped out some pineapple flesh and it tasted juicy and good too.

Sorry, I didn’t include the prices earlier. PuiSee Chu generously paid, snatched and hid the bill from me. Got a scolding from her when I requested to see the prices on Messenger just now. There is a terrorist streak in every woman, no matter how angelic.

She relented and I found out this wonderful dish is RM 15 94 before tax. Will update the prices of the other two dishes from U-Village Restaurant later. The popular restaurant was already full before lunch time proper.

Salted Mustard Greens Soup

Pui See made a good menu decision with Hum Choy (Cantonese) or Kiam Chye (Hokkien) Soup with Tofu (咸菜豆腐汤). Can’t remember what it is labelled as in the menu. The main vegetable is salted, preserved, or pickled mustard greens.

It is a traditional Chinese soup and an assortment of ingredients were boiled together. It included pork, tomatoes, carrots and onions. The tomatoes enhance the already sourish taste. T̶h̶e̶ ̶d̶i̶s̶h̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶e̶s̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶i̶n̶ ̶r̶i̶c̶e̶.̶

I’ll let PuiSee Chu describe the content if she is willing and can recall. I only took a sip. It is a childhood favourite of mine. Surprised and happy to see this in the quick bite U-Village Restaurant. Nevertheless, this is the quick boil type and not the normal home slow cooked version.

Water Dogs

Remember I mentioned that economical spectacle shop in Sungai Wang? I took my mom there today with the help of the ever kind and helpful PuiSee Chu (FB). She took me there on my first visit. Not only is Pui See so patient and understanding, she is also very good with elderly people such as my mom. Me and mom were so touched. We felt so blessed and thankful to have such a caring and genuine friend.

While waiting for the spectacles to be made, we went for a quick lunch. It was at the U-Village Restaurant (FB) – Hong Kong Restaurant. Ordered my mom a bowl of ‘sui kow’ dumplings soup with wonton noodles. Sui Kow is literally translated as ‘water dog’ from Cantonese. I don’t know why.

Even though the ‘sui kow’ were impressively big and luscious, my mom being the typical Chinese, complained there was no pork in it. LOL. Only three prawns (shrimps) in each of the three dumplings. Me and Pu See had better luck with what we ordered though. Coming up next.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I was in Sungai Wang Plaza the other day. PuiSee Chu took me to Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tarts. I was excited at first. I have not tried them before, knowing it is a mega hipster rage even without duck egg yolk in it. I first saw them in a Ramadan bazaar in Singapore last year. Pui See knows her way around Sungai Wang Plaza. She knows the outlets, the corridors, the pink ladies parking and the lift location. Which was a good thing as we found our way around rapidly. I never understood the layout of this old and giant mall. All I know is one wrong turn, I will end up in a row of hair dressing saloons that emanate the most horrific rotten egg odour because Chinese people were perming their straight hair.

That’s Sungai Wang for you. I asked Pui See about her familiarity and she confessed she was a bohsia (or a female teen mall rat) during her Form 4 or Form 5 days. She’ll take a bus here after school. It was the only mall with a cineplex and an ice skating rink during its time. Also the only mall with a filthy food court in the rooftop car park. Tony Warren won’t like this but I met the other Tom Jones of Malaysia working at the garbage incinerator next to the food court. I think it was Mark Sylvester. Would you believe Sungai Wang Plaza is now buying a Harley and getting a man bun? It is now 40 years old, as it opened in 1977. I first met DJ Kenneth MC Zap here too. I think he was spinning at the concourse.

Pui See bought a box of tarts and left me to myself at the table because she needed to get her power bank from her car. Maybe I don’t have enough hipster DNA in my blood. My excitement turned to dismay when I accidentally crushed the tart with my fingers. An ugly mess of disgusting molten cheese spilled into my fingers. How can anyone eat this and not feel jelak? Jelak is a local word to describe over satiation or disgust with certain food that makes you want to puke or burp. Happens when Asians binge eat creamy stuff. This single piece made me want avoid Hokkaido for good!

Not Pui See’s fault though as I wanted to try it. One woman’s cheese is another man’s shit. YMMV. Now Sex Bomb is playing in my mind. All because I checked Mark’s FB and saw a video of him singing the Tom Jones hit. I first saw the Tom Jones of Malaysia Tony Warren when I was a kid when he was singing at Weld Supermarket. It was in a standalone building with a spacious open air car park opposite Weld Swimming Pool. Remember that area? There was Eden too. Love At First Sight

I saw a random post on Malay friend Ku Jie about a shop in Sungei Wang. I like reading Ku Jie’s posts, all along, as she is an animal lover and cat rescuer herself.

This time she posted about taking her daughter to an optometrist shop in Sg Wang. I messaged her and she gave me the address and the Sungai Wang floor plan without hesitation. Love at first sight on her readiness to share. Thank you, sis. Apparently, the shop is all the rage and it went viral in Malay Facebook circles. How come? We non-Malays know nothing about Chinese shops in Chinese Central lah.

The shop sells good quality prescription glasses relatively cheap. RM 65 with the frame, it seems. RM 200 something for bifocal or multi focals. Since my old glasses were getting too scratchy, I was excited as I have to be careful with my money. My eyes were getting tired fast when I work on my upcoming book’s layout.

Good friend PuiSee Chu understood the importance of good vision and she agreed to take me there. No tough interrogation or lame excuses. At the shop, we were greeted by the friendly and clumsy optometrist Michael. Clumsy because he accidentally switched off the eye examination machine before he printed out the readings!

So it means testing my eyes a second time. I chose the frames, paid him and he told us to come back in an hour. I made two pairs, one for mild near (short) sightedness and another for long sightedness (reading).

They cost RM 70 a pair with frame and they may be a better fit than those Daiso ready made or ‘pasar malam’ ones which my GP recommended. Some smart alecs will try to discourage you but ask them if they are willing to pay the triple or 4X or higher prices for you.

I asked Michael if he keeps the records so I can call up to order a pair by phone should I break or lose them and he said can order by name. Anyway, I took a picture of the printout just in case.

The shop is Eyewear, Lot G 103, G Floor, Sungai Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. Tel: 03 2143 1448.

Try at your own risk but do let me know if you are happy or satisfied. I am. Like phone shops, there are many copycats on the same floor or row. So stick to the tried and tested one.

What did we do while waiting for the specs? Since we were at Ah Beng and Ah Lian Central, we went for Chinese hipster food in the form of Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tarts. Haha.
