Warung Mak Tim

To the many people planning to go to Warong Mak Tim for the first time, after reading my posts, here is a view of Warong Mak Tim from outside, for you.

It may be best to look for the road facing it; which is Jalan AU 1A/2F. Google Maps is a bit lacking here. Waze is better.

Also note the sign says business hours are from 11 morning to probably 10 at night. The time was blanked out or painted over, possibly due to changes. Hopefully, Mak Tim’s daughter Dalilah can comment/update us again.

Mee Bandung Muar.

The Muar Mee Bandung at Warong Mak Tim was so authentic, it brought back memories of eating it at famous Abu Bakar Hanipah’s in 70 year old Wah Sun kopitiam in Muar town.

The jolly mamak proprietor was such an intense PR guy he overwhelmed me and my Muar guide, the then local court interpreter Christine Yeow Cher Yuin. Believe me, as a court interpreter, cynical Christine has heard many tall tales and exaggerated claims. LOL.

If you like the thick gravy version from Muar, Mak Tim serves a near similar version. The gravy may not be as thick as Hanipah’s but it was still quite delicious. There are many wannabes all over Malaysia and Mak Tim may be the place to sample it, if you can’t head down to Muar, Johor.

A Rose By Any Other Name Would Taste As Sweet.

At Warong Mak Tim, I ordered a carbonised rose syrup (with soda) and shaved ice after finishing my first drink of Muar iced black coffee. The rose drink wasn’t fizzy enough, so I ordered another with regular ice cubes. Elizabeth thought I drink too much, when I had another drink (fruit juice) as after meal drink elsewhere. Heh.

The resident cat in the background can be seen in a standalone pic in Eli’s Fb.

Ais Jagung

One of Mak Tim’s signature drinks is this Ais Jagung or iced corn drink. According to Elizabeth Chong, who ordered the famous concoction created by Warong Mak Tim, the drink had corn, evaporated milk and aromatic Gula Melaka (brown palm sugar syrup) in one layer and was topped up with a layer of blended or finely shaven or frothy soft ice.

The maize (jagung) is most likely canned sweet corn as those used in ABC drinks, I think. One regular reader in IG said she was hankering for the drink after finding out about the shop’s new location. Must be good.

I can’t remember the price and hope Mak Tim’s daughter Dalilah Ibrahim can comment. Update: She commented it is only RM 3.50 a mug.

No Hard Evidence

I remember when menthol cigarettes were introduced in Malaysia, a curious urban legend soon emerged claiming menthol ciggies will cause softening of erections or a flaccid cock. There was no empirical evidence or scientific evidence but every local guy believed in it.

The evidence were anecdotal at best and were probably from guys who drank too much at clubs. Excessive alcohol can cause ED too.

What was criminal was that the menthol cigarettes and long slim versions were targeted at women to recruit more female smokers by projecting a cool image or trendy perception. Strangely, there were no talk about it affecting a woman’s libido.

Whoever or whatever was the source of the fake news, it was a very effective deterrent for guys. No guy wanted to be seen with a green pack. Haha.

Losing a lung via cancer was less worrisome than losing a hard on.

Although many anti-smoking campaigns suggest smoking can lead to impotency, the point was never driven home. Maybe the medical evidence were not promoted hard enough.

A graphic picture of a limp or soft cock on cigarette packs would have worked better than a black diseased lung I think.
