Masjid Terapung Puchong

Sun, rain, mist, algae and moss. I have a lot to say about pond scum and our famous “lack of maintenance” culture but I’ll save it for another day or until I visit again. Good thing, the serene and beautiful mosque made it more bearable.

1000 99

There was a recent news story entitled “Boy Who Was Stricken With Polio And Is Wheelchair-Bound, Now Owns 800 Minimart Outlets
Throughout Malaysia”.

People forget that the poor guy, Mr Lee Thiam Wah, almost became a victim of racist, vicious and unwarranted boycott campaign targeted at 99 Speedmart after the elections.

I went out of the way to support him because I knew he was a genuine rags to riches story, a disabled person AND most of all, he is a non racist.

His staff used to tell me he treats them well. The irony about the absurd boycott is that he employed over 8000 staff, who are mostly Malays.

In my travels and exploration, I always see a 99 Speedmart outlet in every unknown and new neighborhood. I was thinking this a network more extensive than police stations or post offices. Surely it will be worth gold in future. Power to the hardworking man in a wheelchair. What an inspiring story for entrepreneurs.

Update/edit: I checked their Facebook page and 99 Speedmart has already opened its 951 outlet, nearing a grand total of 1000.

San Miguel Beer Of 1890

Non-beer drinkers may wonder why, at many Asian cities, customers at coffee shops stack finished bottles on the table. It may appear like a competition, if there are more than one table of drinkers.

The reason is quite innocuous, usually. For regulars, no tab is kept by the shop. When they are about to leave, a coffee shop worker or the cashier will count the empty bottles and the total is calculated.

The San Miguel bottles should give a clue to drinkers that this is a coffee shop in the Philippines. It was nice seeing the pale pilsen in its hometown and birthplace. It is one of Phillipines’s most famous global brands. Yes. I tried famous Jollibee burgers too, founded by a Mr Tan.

They drinkers here were bored workers of the Chinese coffee shop itself. It was nightfall outside in Chinatown, Manila.

What was I doing there?

As usual, I wanted to talk to some ethnic Chinese after exploring Manila Chinatown. The men told me St Miguel brewery is owned by a Chinese tycoon, Mr Ang. The corporation also owns Petron petrol stations in Malaysia, I was told.

Kai Si Hor Fun In Notting Hill

The dish Is flat rice noodles with shredded chicken, chives, bean sprouts and chopped scallions, drizzled with sesame oil and soy sauce. I had the dry mix version and it also comes in soup.

Hor Fun looks like kuey teow but only the Chinese can tell the difference. Hor Fun noodles are more slithery and smoother in texture.

The dish originated from and is famous in Ipoh but I had this in a kopitiam in the vicinity of Notting Hill, a pretentious enclave in Bukit Rahman Putra, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur.

I Saw A Stegosaurus With A Beer Belly, Man Boobs And Spine Plates

I Saw A Stegosaurus With A Beer Belly, Man Boobs And Spine Plates.

I was driving in Port Klang town when I thought I saw a human Stegosaurus from the Jurassic period. I stopped my car and got down to have a closer look.

It turned out some form of ancient Chinese and Egyptian cupping therapy. According to the Malay ‘medicine man’, the bamboo tubes suck out bad “wind” form the body.

There is a ‘snake oil’ salesman outside each of the three lottery shops.

Of course, you don’t have to look like a dinosaur or flash your manboobs to the innocent public.

The five-foot-way stall owner has a bottle of green liquid that can do the same magic for only RM10.

I liked how reactive or flexible the salesman was. When he sees a potential Chinese customer, he will say he learned it from a Chinese sifu.

When an Indian customer takes an interest, he says: “Look at my faithful Indian client sitting here.” Hehe.

Malay customers? His pitch was you can find him selling outside the National Mosque on certain days. Subtly suggesting some religious validation for the naive. Brilliant.
