Chiselled Stone, A Yogi Gynecologist And A Dinosaur.

Batu Pahat is both a district and city in the state of Johor. It lies to the south of Muar. In its prosperous days in the past, the town was nicknamed “Little Paris of the East” as it was famous for its robust night life.

It is now more sedate but many hotels still exist. I called on local resident and my friend Dr Lowkp Pakar Sakit Puan, obstetrician and gynecologist (OB/GYN) at the New Putra Specialist Hospital in Batu Pahat to send me some pictures. https://www.facebook.com/obgy.lowkp on Fb.

Picture of the good doc doing yoga with a dinosaur at Taman Rekreasi Tasik Batu Pahat. Notice it is a T Rex and not baby goats as it is now the trend sweeping the world. I am sure the good doctor will be embracing goat yoga when it hits the rural scape or farms of Batu Pahat.

The seaside town acquired the name Batu Pahat, which means “chiselled stone”, from the quarries near the estuary. It used to be Bandar Penggaram when salted fish was its main produce. Today, there are many factories in BP producing garments and furniture.

My Kokomo

Someone booked the Aman Sari Hotel in Bandar Penawar Desaru recently. I don’t know who it was. Normally, friends who booked will tell me in private but is non-obligatory.

Desaru is pronounced as Day Sar Roo. Coincidentally, I wrote about my liking of the beach recently too. Desaru went through a ‘renaissance’ after the opening of the highway from JB. Unlike Bali, the 22 km of beach here has no rowdy drunk Aussie tourists, as told to me by Rian Maelzer, who visited Kuta after Ubud.

There are no beach bars or peddlers with an ice box here, fortunately. Still unspoiled like how it was when it captivated a handful of Singaporeans in the 80s.

The tranquility may be shattered soon. I hope not. A massive refinery and petrochemical complex is being developed in Pengerang town at the southern Johor tip facing Singapore. Singaporean cycling friends reported seeing heavy heavy vehicle traffic on the old truck road.

There are a dozen other Desaru hotels listed at MyCen Hotels. Kokomo is a fictional place as sung in the hit song Kokmo by the Beach Boys. It supposedly is in the Caribbean or off the Florida Keys. 1st pic: Sun painting shadows on windy Desaru beach.

Hometown Colours

Hometown Colours.

Rain falls on the parched road of tiny Sungai Mati town. The town of Dead River used to be a bustling river port. It was so named because it became an oxbow lake or billabong after breaking from the Muar River. Located on the outskirts of Muar town.

It is not my hometown and I stopped here while I was going to Muar for a holiday. Stopped because the colours were so striking. It was also on this trip, I discovered there is a bridge which Muarians call the Penang Bridge. Confusingly, the official name is also very original as in Jambatan Kedua. WTFish? Haha.

Incidentally, I received a second booking for the new Muo Boutique Hotel by an unknown person for the Hari Raya period again. If you are planning to book a hotel for the “balik kampung” trip ahead, please do so early. It is getting to be a common practice and people do it for various reasons. Many small town hotels are understandably small and have limited rooms.
